Springfield Township (Mahoning County, OH) fire chief Brian Hughes has been charged with a misdemeanor charge that he participated in a scheme to falsely report via 911 that a barn fire had been accidentally started, when in fact is was a prearranged fire. Beaver police chief Carl Frost said that Hughes allegedly directed a fire captain to tell the property owner make the 911 call, reporting it had been started by cutting tools. It’s not clear if the fire was started for training or merely to destroy the barn. Frost explained that the chief the property owner to avoid any legal problems, since the proper environmental permits had not been obtained for the fire. The chief was booked, released on $500 bond and was back to work, officials said. The fire captain was also arrested and charged with making a false report via 911.
