A New Zealand man has been fined $1,030 and warned by a judge after pleading guilty to illegally accessing a police computer network and forgery. David Lee, 36, a radio technician, apparently tweaked a radio and used it to access the police network, and then requested vehicle registration information. Police said he used all the proper radio codes when making his request. When tracked down and arrested, Lee had forged business cards indicating he was a constable. His defense attorney said he accessed the radio and made the cards out of “intellectual curiousity.” The judge agreed that his behavior was “foolish and larrikin” and did not jail Lee.
