Lancaster County (Penn.) coroner G. Gary Kirchner has been arrested and charged with illegally giving five reporters access to the county’s 911 system. A grand jury gave immunity to the reporters, who testified that the elected Kirchner gave them his password, apparently so they obtain information about crimes, which they later used to write newspaper stories. Investigators cancelled Kirchner’s password, and then logged several dozen further attempts to use it, prompting further investigation. Kirchner faces 14 years in jail and $30,000 in fines.
