Florida residents are trying to recover from the recent tornadoes that swept through four counties, and are asking why they weren’t warned of the nighttime storms. Lake County has no alerting system, and officials say a siren system would be ineffective in the largely rural county with a dispersed population. Sumter County has a telephone alerting system, but it’s not clear if and when the system was activated. Either way, weather forecasters were able to give just 10 minutes notice of the tornado that struck, and most residents were sleeping when the tornadoes hit.
