Grant County (Ind.) officials are investigating why firefighters could not reach Marion General Hospital on the radio to request a medical helicopter for a seriously-injured volunteer firefighter. Firefighters tried using two different radio systems to call the hospital, and eventually had to relay their request through the sheriff’s comm center. A helicopter arrived from a second hospital, but the firefighter died two days later. County EMS director Duaine Ashcraft said firefighters used their older radios, which didn’t work, and then tried the new 800 MHz radios, which didn’t work because the system isn’t completed.
