Interop vs. Old Radios

The national media is focusing on the recent DHS interoperability assessment, but often it’s not so complicated for smaller agencies–they just need basic capabilities. The village of Lansing (Ill.) is using 9 year-old radios, and the trustees just voted to purchase 18 new Motorola radios for detectives and administrators. The purchase will add to the purchase of 18 radios last July for $12,574 that improved patrol officer communications. The village hopes to use a state purchasing contract to buy additional radios, using 911 funds after they couldn’t obtain a grant for the latest purchase, although a homeland security grant paid for the first batch of radios.
