Fire Response Delayed

The repsonse to a fire in a Massillon (Ohio) apartment complex was delayed by 10 minutes when the first cellular 911 call reporting the fire was routed to the adjacent city of Canton. Fire officials say the delay contributed to the spread of the fire, which destroyed the complex. Tim Warstler, director of Stark County Emergency Management Agency, said the dispatcher asked the caller if she was in Canton, and the caller said, “Right.” The address the caller gave exists in both cities, further complicating the call. The county comm center answers all 911 calls and, without Phase II wireless service, must determine the proper jurisdiction for 911 calls.
