The CTIA Wireless Foundation will honor 3 year-old beagle Belle Weaver for dialing 911 in Ocoee (Fla.) last year when her master Kevin Weaver fell unconscious from a diabetic problem. The Foundation is flying Belle and Weaver to Washington (DC) for the ceremonies with 30 other award recipients. The dog is specially trained to detect the smell associated with ketone levels, indicating Weaver’s diabetic condition, and to bite down on the number “9” key of his cellular phone to call for help–at a cost of $9,000 over nine months. The Foundation is also giving awards to 30 other recipients at a banquet in DC.
